Books That Boys Will Love

It is the first full day of summer, for you guys and gals anyway, but I started my reading early, so here are some books for you to peruse. I say books that boys will love, but really these books are for anyone that loves action and adventure.

From our summer reading list is Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow. The main character is Jake Ransom, and he and his sister get sent back in time or through space and found themselves in a mystery surrounding their parents' disappearance. They must face and defeat the Skull King, and evil being that threatens the new world they find themselves in. I think this book is like Indiana Jones for today. (Do you know who Indiana Jones is?!) The boy must use his vast knowledge of ancient civilizations to help him defeat the Skull King. This is the first in a series, so we are left with more clues about the Ransom parents, but the mystery is left unsolved. The book is full of action and adventure, mystery and suspense. I loved it and have added the rest of the series to my list.

Also from our summer reading list is Mudshark. This book has more comedy than the Jake Ransom book, and it a bit shorter as well. Mudshark is a bit of a detective, much like Sean from Psych (one of my favorite shows!), and he is perplexed when a talking parrot comes to his school and threatens to take his place. Mudshark also has to figure out what is happening to the school erasers, they are disappearing from every classroom. The author is Gary Paulson, who has written Hatchet and Lawn Boy, two popular books. I thought the book was funny, and it is a quick read.

One of my favorites from last summer is due to have the last of the series printed this summer, and it is a wonderful series. It is the Fablehaven series. The first is called Fablehaven. It is about a brother and sister who end up having to spend the summer with their grandparents. Little do they know that their grandparents are the caretakers of a reserve for mythical creatures. Someone is trying to destroy the preserves around the world, and the pair embark on an adventure to save them. This was one of my favorite series from last summer, and I know that you will enjoy them too.

Girls, please do not hesitate to read any of these books, I really love them! None of them are strictly for boys, but are not about "girlie" things, like the next few books I review will be!

Happy reading!

Atherton: House of Power

This is the first in a new series of books by Patrick Carman. This book was incredibly interesting, and different from my other loved series because it is science fiction instead of fantasy. So for you science buffs, this is a great book. The premise is that Earth has been trashed, and in order to save the human race a new "planet" has been created. Unfortunately for the inhabitants of this planet, it has some problems that they are going to have to face. If you have seen Wall-E, and liked it, you might like this book as well.

Crazy Summer

Wow! I just realized how long it has been since I have posted. I have been reading of course, mostly my new favorite serieses, but I've snuck in a couple of others too.

One that you will enjoy is A Picture for Marc. Why will I enjoy it you ask? First, it is the shortest book on our list! I know that is important when you have a busy summer planned. Second, it is an interesting book that is written like fiction, but is actually non-fiction. The book is about Marc Chagall, a Russian artist, one of the most influential of the twentieth century. I liked it because it was fast paced and inspiring.

Another I have read is Half Magic, which I have mentioned before. This is an old book, over 25 years old actually, and you can tell when reading it. I like it because it makes you think about what you would wish for, and has you doing a little math! I'd like to know what you think of it, especially compared to many of the popular books written today. Can you tell how writing has changed over the years? What does this tell us about how students have changed?

Have a happy Fourth of July!

Night and Day

I have read two very different books this week, Nightmare at the Bookfair and Someone Named Eva.

"Nightmare" is the perfect book for you if you like a lot of action to keep things interesting. A boy hits his ead at a bookfair and the book tells about his crazy dream. Since most of the book is a dream it jumps around and stays interesting.

"Eva" is a historical fiction novel about a young girl taken from her home during WWII, and trained to be a model German citizen. I loved this book, although it saddened me and shocked me too. Although the
characters are fictional, the story is based on fact. One reason that I love the book so much is that you begin to know and empathize with the characters. I like books with strong characters, how about you? What books have you read that have great characters?

I hope you have begun your own summer reading adventure! I'd love to hear about it!

For Fun

I truly enjoy learning, and right now I am very interested in cool tools on the Internet to make learning more enjoyable. In order to learn more about those tools, I am taking an online course, this is my second one. Tonight I learned about a cool site called Wordle, that we will definitely use when school starts. You take any text, I used this blog, and you can turn it into a word cloud. Here is the one I made:

Try it out, and send me your pictures. (Quick instructions for saving: use the print screen button on your computer keyboard, this copies the screen. Then paste the picture into powerpoint and use the crop tool to get rid of the extra. Finally, save the slide as a jpg. Have mom or dad e-mail it to me!)
